We are SRT Guest Blog – Artlady Sonya’s Story

I’m Sonya Clemons, the Artlady.

Here in Alabama, people tend to refer to me as the latter, and that’s just fine. I began my career as an artist in 1996, but I’ve always drawn. I tell people it’s the only thing I know how to do—it’s how I communicate.

I had no idea how things would develop. I began as a brush for hire, and my work quickly evolved into murals. I eventually became a muralist for the Madison County School System, where I painted over 50 murals based on Arts in Education.

I enjoy focusing on the community and culture in our state and the South. I create art for local and state governments and organizations, which they feature to promote the area, the people, and the beautiful diversity found here. Art, to me, is a way to bring people together and celebrate our shared experiences.

That’s why I love providing art along the Singing River Trail (SRT). The trail itself is all about connection—linking communities and stories through a shared path. Art has a unique ability to reflect that mission by reaching people in meaningful and sometimes unexpected ways. Whether I’m painting murals or showcasing pieces in local installations along the trail, I always feel like I’m contributing to something larger. The SRT brings folks together, and I like to think my art does the same. It’s a wonderful harmony.

Art is a happy and positive way to do just that. And speaking of all that…I am a resident artist for the Jackson County Drug Court and the Recovery Community. The program is called Pictures of Hope, and it brings art to people who need something bright and positive. It has been a success, to say the least, more than I ever imagined. This year, we have branched out to the Madison County Probate Court Mental Health Program, and that in itself is amazing to me. We have had local and national attention, and I’m so proud of us. And I get to create my own art, which sells in galleries here and there… which was always one of my personal goals.

Recently, a gallery in Asheville, North Carolina, picked me up. I reside in Jackson County, but grew up in Huntsville, so I work a lot in those counties and pretty much across North Alabama. Whether in Huntsville, Jackson County, or further afield along the Singing River Trail, I find inspiration in every community I work with. I’ve been Panoply poster artist, another goal reached, named one of the Women That Shape the State, and even received a Commendation from the Governor for years of service…and so much more than I ever dreamed of…and I’m still going.

I enjoy putting my touch on the Singing River Trail, and I’m excited to be part of its history. Anything is possible…keep making the trail.
